South African Cricket Team has finally reached the T20 World Cup semi-final after ten years of waiting. They last reached the semi-finals in the 2014 T20 World Cup. The Proteas defeated the home team, West Indies, in a must-win encounter at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, on 24th June 2024. Marco Jansen hit the winning runs by smashing a six off the last over’s first ball. The game broke many records for South Africa and helped them remove the tag of chokers to an extent. Let’s take a look at the match summary.
SA vs WI: T20 World Cup 2024 Super 8 Match Summary
South African captain Aiden Markram won the toss and invited his opponent to bat first. West Indies could not get going throughout their innings and struggled against the likes of Keshav Maharaj, Tabraiz Shamsi and Aiden Markram. Interestingly, Kagiso Rabada was brought into the attack in the 18th over as the Proteas spinners did very well against the West Indian power hitters.
Roston Chase high-scored for West Indies with 52 off 42. No other West Indian batter managed to support him, and ultimately, the home team ended with 135/8 in 20 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi was the highest wicket-taker for South Africa, with 3 wickets to his name.
The Proteas chase was interrupted by the rain, and the target was shortened to 123 in 17 overs. At one moment, South Africa seemed to be cruising, with Heinrich Klaasen scoring 20 off just one over of Gudakesh Motie. However, after his dismissal, the Proteas struggled as David Miller could not get going. Roston Chase troubled the Proteas batters by picking 3 wickets. However, Marco Jansen kept his nerves and played a sensible knock to take his team home.
